くさかカバン店 - Kusaka Kaban Ten
くさかカバン店は、札幌市の中心部を東西に走るアーケード街「狸小路」の8丁目にある鞄店。店の扉を開けて店内に足を踏み入れると、昭和の日本の風景が広がります。くさかカバン店が取り扱うのは、オーナーの日下功二さんと弘子さんが制作する日下公司の革製品が中心。ほかにも、お二人がセレクトした、札幌にゆかりのある職人の製品や雑貨が並びます。店の奥は日下公司の工房になっていて、日下夫妻が革製品を制作する様子を見ることができます。
日下公司は、1995年の創業以来、伝統的な技術を用いて、時代に左右されない普遍的な魅力を持つ製品をつくり続けています。その姿勢は、D&DEPARTMENT PROJECTが提案する「ロングライフデザイン」の考え方と共通点が多く、D&DEPARTMENT HOKKAIDOで日下公司の製品を取り扱わせていただくだけでなく、企画展やワークショップを開催するなど、親しくさせていただいています。「日下公司がつくる製品の一番のヘビーユーザーは自分たち」と言う日下夫妻は、私たちが最も尊敬する作家のひとり、いえ、ふたりです。
Kusaka Kaban Ten sits quietly in the eighth block of Sapporo’s Tanukikoji arcade, a narrow stretch running east to west through the city’s center. Open the door and step inside, and a faintly nostalgic scene unfolds, a touch of Japan’s Showa era lingering in the air. The heart of the shop is filled with leather goods handcrafted by the owners, Kouji and Hiroko Kusaka. Alongside their work, you’ll find crafts and small items selected from artisans with ties to Sapporo, each chosen with care. At the back of the shop, their studio reveals the couple at work, tools in hand, shaping leather with the steady rhythm of practiced hands.
Since its founding in 1995, Kusaka Kōshi has relied on traditional techniques to craft pieces with a quiet, timeless appeal. Their philosophy resonates deeply with the idea of “long-life design” championed by the D&DEPARTMENT PROJECT, with whom they’ve built a close relationship through product collaborations, exhibitions, and workshops. “We’re the heaviest users of our own products,” the Kusakas often say, a sentiment that only deepens our respect for them.

日下公司の20周年を記念して発行した社史の編集とデザインを手掛けました。尊敬する職人が試行錯誤を繰り返した歴史。仕事を依頼いただいたのはとても嬉しく、全力でつくりました。
For the company’s 20th anniversary, we had the privilege of editing and designing their commemorative company history. It is a record shaped by years of trial, refinement, and craftsmanship. Taking on the project was an honor, and we approached it with our full commitment.

日下公司の20周年を記念して制作したノベルティ。キリッとした製品をつくる日下夫妻ですが、革製品を離れると意外とかわいいものも好き。この手ぬぐいには、そんなお二人の好みが表れている気がします。功ニさんと弘子さんが鞄製作に使用している道具を描いています。
A special tenugui was also created to mark the anniversary. Though the Kusakas produce crisp, beautifully disciplined leatherwork, they have a fondness for gentle, charming things away from the workbench. This tenugui reflects that softer side, its illustrations depict the tools Kouji and Hiroko use each day as they shape their bags.
