cholon
cholon（チョロン）は、オリジナルの洋服を仕立て、アジアの街で買い付けた雑貨を販売するお店です。店名は、ホーチミンのチャイナタウンの通称に由来してます。ベトナム語で「大きな市場」という意味。店主の佐々木智子さんは、裁縫が大好きだった母の影響を受け、幼い頃から布や糸に囲まれて育ちました。25歳でベトナムを訪れたことが、彼女の転機となります。バイクが行き交う喧騒、湿気を帯びた空気、市場に山積みされた色鮮やかな布やボタン。その熱気とエネルギーに心を奪われました。
はじめてのベトナム旅行からちょうど1年後。1997年10月、智子さんは、札幌中心部の雑居ビル3階にcholonをオープンしました。2004年には東京にも店舗を広げ、cholon銀座店をオープン。札幌、東京、ホーチミンを行き来しながら、ものづくりを続けました。出産を機に、2014年に、惜しまれながら全ての店舗を閉店。その後は、タイの児童養護施設「バーンロムサイ」に併設された縫製工場を手伝いながら、創作を続けました。そして、4年のブランクを経て、2018年にcholonのオンラインストアを再開。さらに、2019年には札幌でお店を再開しました。現在は、拠点をホーチミンから、タイ・バンコクへ移し、新たな一歩をどう踏み出すのか、模索しているところです。
cholon is a boutique that creates original clothing and offers thoughtfully sourced goods from cities across Asia. The name comes from "Cholon," the commonly used name for Chinatown in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), meaning "big market" in Vietnamese. Founder Tomoko Sasaki grew up surrounded by fabric and thread, influenced by her mother's love of sewing. At 25, she traveled to Vietnam, a trip that became a turning point. The constant flow of motorbikes, the humidity in the air, and the vibrant piles of fabric and buttons stacked high in the markets captivated her.
Exactly one year after that first trip, in October 1997, she opened cholon on the third floor of a small commercial building in central Sapporo, northern Japan. In 2004, she expanded to Tokyo with the opening of cholon Ginza. Moving between Sapporo, Tokyo, and Ho Chi Minh City, she continued to develop her work. In 2014, following the birth of her child, she made the difficult decision to close all locations. She continued her creative work while supporting a sewing studio connected to Ban Rom Sai, an orphanage in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, dedicated to providing a home for up to 30 children affected by HIV/AIDS. After a four-year hiatus, cholon returned as an online store in 2018, followed by the reopening of a physical shop in Sapporo in 2019. Today, Sasaki has relocated her base from Ho Chi Minh City to Bangkok, Thailand, where she is exploring the next chapter of cholon.

裁縫好きの女性が、ベトナム旅行をきっかけに自分の店を持つに至ったいきさつをまとめた一冊です。編集は東明高史さん。春夏秋冬、季節の遷り変わりが閉じ込められている丁寧な構成です。日下公司の20年史や、シアターキノ30周年記念出版『若き日の映画本』と並んで、札幌で生まれた文化を記録した、手応えのある仕事のひとつです。2010年10月発売。
cholon book tells the story of how Tomoko Sasaki came to open her own shop, inspired by her travels in Vietnam. Edited by Takafumi Shinoaki, the book is thoughtfully composed, capturing the quiet transitions of the seasons. Alongside works such as The 20-Year History of Kusaka Kōshi (Kusaka Leather Studio) and Theater Kino 30th Anniversary Publication, Wakaki Hi no Eigabon (A Cinema Book of Youth), it stands as a meaningful contribution to documenting Sapporo’s independent culture. cholon book was published in October 2010.
