What does 3KG stand for? This is one of the most frequently asked questions since we started working in 2001. The average weight of newborn babies are approximately 3 kg in Japan. This is where our name "3KG" came from. We were just like one of new born babies full of expectation and fears for future.

We have been working in Sapporo where we were born and grew up. It takes 1.5 hours by plane from Tokyo. Apparently less cultural things are going on here compared to big cities. Industries such as art, design, film and music is very small. We enjoy working here now however we have had an idea moving to capital cities. There are negative aspects of course but it depends on how you see things. Thinking globally, acting locally or thinking locally, acting globally whichever.

We started our business as a small studio with three graphic designers and simply followed our interests goes. Then expanding our field from printings to the web, moving images and broadcasting naturally. Just like children, we could not help trying something new for us out of curiosity.

We spent first a few years without having our own web site while working hard with clients and partners. Then we found that we turned 3 year-old as a company. It is time for us to start talking to the world. It is time for us to having our own web site to do so.

「3KGの名前の由来は?」これは、2001年に活動を開始して以来、繰り返し尋ねられている質問。日本人の新生児の平均体重は約3kg。これが3KGの名前の由来です。ちなみに、サンキログラムではなく、スリーケイジーと読みます。名前を考えているころの私たちは、生まれたての赤ちゃんと同じように、期待と不安でいっぱいでした。

3KGが拠点を構える札幌は、東京から飛行機で1時間半。世界の大都市と比較すると、アート、デザイン、映画、音楽などの文化産業は小規模です。他の都市へ移住することを考えたこともありますが、今ではこの街で活動することを楽しんでいます。もちろん、ネガティブな側面はありますが、きっと考え方次第。グローバルに考えローカルに活動してみたり、ローカルに考えグローバルに活動してみたり。

グラフィックデザイナー3人でスタートした3KG、子供のように好奇心に駆られて新しいことに挑戦するうちに、ウェブ、モーション・グラフィックス、テレビ番組のディレクションなど、活動範囲が自然に拡張していきました。

クライアントやパートナーとの仕事に明け暮れ、自分たちのウェブを作ることができないまま数年が過ぎました。そうこうしているうちに会社としてもう3歳。そろそろ「パパ」「ママ」くらいの言葉を話し始めてもよい頃ではないかと。そこで、重い腰をあげて、自社のウェブ制作に本腰を入れました。遅すぎるくらいかもしれません。

友人や恋人のアルバムを見ると、ついついほほえんでしまいます。私たちのウェブもそんな存在であって欲しいと思っています。
